Winding along the Chattahoochee River in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this Northeast Georgia town has a rich history dating back to the Cherokee Indians and their burial mounds, and early settlers who mined for gold and cut virgin timber. Helen, hosts an annual Octoberfest (the nation's longest) and draws over one hundred thousand tourists beginning mid September and continuing through the end of October. Other events and festivals occur throughout the year. A small, remote mountain community with mountain heritage and a touch of Bavaria, Helen has created a unique experience for its visitor. ![]() © The Atlanta Guide Festivals and special events include a hot air balloon race, Winefest, Volksmarch, Oktoberfest and Christmas parades, Fourth of July fireworks, and Bavarian Nights of Summer. From mid-September through October, Helen hosts the longest Oktoberfest in the South. Alpenfest offers entertainment for visitors during the Holiday season from Thanksgiving through December.
